The activities of the AQVA rely heavily on volunteers. They would not be possible without those who help us make a successful and safe sailing program operational at all levels.

Thanks to you, we can all make recreational and sport sailing accessible to people with physical disabilities who would not otherwise be able to participate. You will make new friends, have a great time and most importantly, you will be appreciated.

Safety

The safety of AQVA members and volunteers is very important to us. Knowledge of first aid and sensitivity to people with disabilities are assets. Due to the special circumstances of our members, new volunteers may be required to undergo a safety investigation and reference check.

Liability and Insurance

AQVA carries $5 million in general liability insurance. As with most recreational activities, there is always some risk associated with physical exertion and in our case the proximity of water. Therefore, all participants must complete and sign a liability waiver.

Volunteering on the water

We greatly appreciate the time offered by volunteers with good sailing knowledge to accompany our sailors as a sailing companion.  This allows us to increase our service offering to complement the outings done by our instructors.

And our annual regatta, the Quebec Cup, could never be a success without the contribution of volunteer sailors with racing experience who share their knowledge with the Silver Fleet sailors.

We also need help on the water for the race team's training sessions.

As of 2021, criminal background checks are required for sailing companions who come in contact with our members on the boats. This step is crucial to maintain a sense of safety among our members. On your first visit, we will have you fill out a questionnaire and the information given will remain confidential.

Volunteering on shore

Since our sailboats are used 7 days a week they take a lot of abuse!  There is always something to fix. Volunteers with knowledge of boat maintenance and repair are invaluable!

We also appreciate help on the dock with sailor transfers and docking the boats, especially during our regatta, the Quebec Cup.  This is one of the most rewarding volunteer roles as we see the smiles on the sailors' faces!

Other ways to help us

AQVA needs administrative help throughout the year to meet our administrative needs such as translation and fundraising.  We also need volunteers to accompany the race team to regattas outside of Montreal and to help with registration and meals at the regattas we organize.

And the success of our social events depends largely on the contributions of our volunteers!
